Basketball's 1 - 2 - 1 - 1 Zone Press DefenseHow to run the 1211 zone press defense
By the Coaching Well staff
This press is effective for rallies and for wearing down an opponent to cause the opponent to make more than the usual number of mistakes. It is useful against a poor ball handling team. It has the disadvantage of all presses of tiring your team and susceptibility to numerical disadvantage when it is broken by a pass or dribble which advances beyond a line of defenders.
Positions and Responsibilities:
Ideally the point player is one of your larger, quicker, and more aggressive athletes. This player’s responsibilities are to cause the player to whom the ball was inbounded to dribble (aggression), to force the dribble up the sideline (quickness), and to prevent the reverse pass (size).

The strong side wing player on the ball side has the responsibility of stopping the forward dribble advance of the player being forced up the sideline by the point player. When the wing player stops the advance the wing player and point player trap the dribbler.
The weak side wing player floats into the middle area and intercepts passes thrown to that area by the dribbler.
The middle player is one of your larger quicker athletes. This player’s responsibilities include intercepting any passes up the strong side sideline to the half court line area. If this player is sufficiently quick and sufficiently adept at aggressively playing the passing lanes, this player can make a surprising number of interceptions. This player also moves up to trap the ball in the event the ball gets up the sideline past the strong side wing player.
The safety player has the responsibility of preventing lay ups and, when clearly possible, intercepting deep passes.

Recovering From Sideline Advances and Reverses
If the ball is passed, or the dribbler dribbles, beyond the strong side wing player, then there is a possibility to reset the press.

In this case, the players rotate to reconstruct the zone. The middle player moves up to occupy the strong side wing player position and stops the ball’s forward advance and then traps the ball holder with the pursuing point player. The weak side wing player runs from the position of floating in the middle area to occupy the middle player position up the strong side sideline from the ball. The strong side wing player pivots and runs to occupy the weak side wing player’s position floating in the middle area. The safety remains in the safety position.
If the ball is reversed, then the weak side wing player is to make a decision.

If the ball is advancing, then the player is to stop the forward advancement until the point player recovers to assist with the setting of the double team on the dribbler. If the ball is not advancing then the player is to wait for the point player to recover and force the ball holder to dribble up the sideline toward the wing player.
If the ball gets closer to the defenders’ basket than a defender, then the defender is to turn and sprint to defend the basket or catch up with the ball. Receive the journal for free, click here.
